EVA/DC AztecThis is our Aztec project. MIT was cleaning house and wanted to find a new home for the car so we took them up on the offer. We are currently restoring it to its original running condition. The 3-wheeler was MITs first Solar Racer and has raced in the Tour de Sol several times and won several awards in its history. The Aztec is about 10 years old and holds two people side by side in the front.
The body is fully enclosed and the underbelly is as smooth as the top. The frame is inserted into the car from the back. We built a special dolly to support the body while work is being done on the frame. The body is made of carbon fiber and features gull wing doors and a removable rear hatch. The wheels are custom turned magnesium alloy and are running on moped tires. The rear chain drive is powered by a Solectria drive system. We installed new hydraulic brakes and have upgrade the suspension. We also replaced the windshield and side windows. The car runs on 120 volts of Trojan sealed 12-volt batteries 4 up front and the rest behind the drivers seat. The solar panels trickle charge the pack. We removed, tested and replaced the connectors on each of the solar panels. During races the car has a foldable array that connects parallel to the array on the car and is set out during breaks to recharge the batteries. It also has a conductive charger as well. We expect to test drive the vehicle at the end of April. We will be using the car as an educational tool to promote EVs and sustainable energy.
