Work
Progresses on Solar EV
EVA/DC has embarked on a journey to restore MIT's original Solar EV
named the "Aztec". The car has a long history having raced
in several NESEA Tour de Sols.
The Aztec mission began three years ago when EVA/DC members Joe Reyes,
John Clinton and Jerry Asher traveled to Boston to pick up the Aztec
and bring it to Joe's garage in Maryland. The two-passenger, three-wheeled
vehicle is a 120-volt carbon-fiber car complete with a solar array,
custom made magnesium wheels and a Solectria drive train.
We recently had the vehicle titled as a car in Maryland and we are
getting it ready to pass inspection. The car is being road tested and
we race it and enter it in local parades and events.
Plug-In Hybrids or PHEVs? What are they? They are like commercially
available "mild" hybrids like the Toyota Prius, but with a
bigger battery pack that can get you 50 - 60 miles on the "all
electric" mode before the gasoline motor kicks in to help recharge
those batteries. That way, if you want to plug in to your wall socket
and "sock it" to OPEC and Big Oil, and fill up your electric
fuel tank at the cost of 50-70 cents per gallon equivalent, then you
have that FREEDOM TO CHOOSE.
The Energy CS team has built such a plug-in hybrid based on a 2004
Toyota Prius. The team replaced the OEM 1.3kW NiMH battery pack with
a 9kW Valence Technology Saphion U-Charge battery pack. The car now
gets the equivalent of 120 to 180 mpg and has an electric range of up
to 60 miles.
You can also choose to get your electricity to plug in your EV from
non-polluting solar panels on the roof of your home, as EVADC's Bryan
Murtha does, or from wind/solar power electricity vendors. For more
info, see:

Power of DC electric vehicle drag race which was held this past
